One challenge I have faced at internship is that I have really bad memory, so sometimes I won't remember what my mentor told me to do. It often happens when they tell me to do a few small tasks, but just explain how to do all of them by talking me through it, and then by the time I do the tasks I forget how to do them. Then I have two choices: either ask them a million times what they asked me to do again, or how do you do it, or risk doing it wrong and getting in trouble. I've been working on fixing this by trying to write down quick notes on how to do it as they talk, or right after, so I won't forget.
A problem my colleagues faced so far was that once during class, a young girl hurt her back pretty severely during training, and was forced to be taken out by the ambulance. Andre handled this very well, keeping calm and also helping the girl stay calm because you could tell she was very scared. I thought this was interesting, because if I was in Andre's place, I would have been freaking out myself for the girl, but he stayed very calm and collected and handled it very well.

I commented on Lillie, Gisselle, and Aspen's DP. It was really cool seeing that all of them are enjoying internships and gaining experience and knowledge along the way. Some things that stood out to me was that me and Aspen are both working behind a desk most of the time, while Lillie and Gisselle work more on their feet and have more interactive jobs throughout the day. However, Gisselle and I both work with kids around the same age and we both enjoy it, so we might consider pursuing a job that has to do with children.
Since internship, I have a clearer idea of what I want to do when I am older. It showed me that I am not the person who can just sit behind the desk all day and answer emails, like I sometimes have to do, because I get too bored and my attention span isn't long enough. It has shown me that I would be good at teaching something, preferably with kids. The most important thing is that I work with people and get to socialize and interact with them so I can enjoy my job and not get bored.
At Atos Jiu Jitsu, a large emphasis is built on working together and interacting with each other to create a good environment that everyone can enjoy. The Atos motto is "Together We Are Stronger" and you can see it a lot in the work ethic of the gym. Instructors often collaborate together to think of ways to improve their coaching and brainstorm what positions to teach. They also interact with their students, often communicating to them and giving them feedback on how they can improve their Jiu Jitsu, which creates a friendship between teacher and student. During classes, teammates also interact with each other and often cheer each other on. All of these accumalate to create an academy where everyone feels supported, safe, and happy.
I'm not completely sure what I want to do for my project. I was thinking I could either film a video/ commercial for the business, or I could design a patch or T-shirt that Atos could possibly sell if they like it. I'm not super crazy about either, so maybe I will think of a better one.
The work I do here at Atos benefits many people, but I think I leave most impact on the kids I get to teach. During the day, I work a lot on the computer, so I don't get to interact with many people, so I get very excited when I get to work with the kids. I believe that I set a good example for the kids, and help them acheive confidence in themselves. As I stay working with the kids, I see them open up to me and see them not afraid to ask questions, where last week they were very shy and didn't feel comfortable. I hope as I continue teaching with them I continue to see improvement in their fitness, discipline, and attitude
Today I interviewed my coworker, Melissa Cruz. We work together at the front desk, and she has been showing me a lot of how to work the front desk. I'm really thankful to have someone as patient and understanding as her as my coworker! During our conversation, she said she has always worked in retail and business, very similar as the field she works in now. She is the front desk manager and sales associate at Atos Jiu Jitsu, which includes selling memberships, answering phone calls, managing social media, and selling merchandise. Melissa moved here from the small island of Guam, where she attended Academy of Our Lady of Guam, a private Catholic school. Since moving to California, she has began working at Atos, attends Mesa Community College, and is a mom.
I just finished my first week of internship, and I have to say I'm pretty excited for the next three weeks. I already know internship is going to be a super positive experience for me and I will gain a lot of knowledge from it. One thing that surprised me this week was during teaching kids class. l always thought this was an easy job, because you already know what to do, and you just have to tell others how to do it. But this is not the case. I realized that its very hard to communicate to someone who doesn't know what they're doing, what they should be doing with specific parts of their body. It has for sure made me appreciate any kind of teacher that has to do this, because it is not easy. This week I mostly worked with this girl Stephanie, who had just started and needed help in the beginning, but thankfully for me she was a super fast learner. This is a picture of me watching the technique Andre is teaching before helping the kids perform the technique. Atos Jiu Jitsu's mission statement is:
"Our academy consistently provides support to students who wish to excel. Our vision of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is to create winning attitudes. At Atos Jiu-Jitsu we aim to create champions on and off the mat. No matter the age or the skill level of the student, our jiu-jitsu instructors are patient, well-trained, and experienced ready to help you reach your goals." I see this being implemented in the company a lot. I got to see it first hand when I got to help teach the kids class, and all the instructors had no problem taking extra time to help the kids during the techinique and sparring. But the instructors don't stop after the class is done, they also took time to talk to the kids after class and ask them about their personal life like how their day went, which leaves a good influence on the kids. |
